Students in the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) are gaining tons of work experience in their summer internships and making important connections back to what they’ve been learning in the classroom all year. Learn how they're applying what they know on the job!
Name: Ashely David
Year in College: Senior
Major(s): Dance, Communication (Public Relations track)
Internship Position: Press/Editorial Intern
Organization: Jacob Pillow Dance Festival
Maintaining media relations is a major aspect of David’s work at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Ma. Not only is she writing press releases and managing relationships with journalists, she’s gaining experience in all aspects of arts administration from working in the festival’s box office to creating a new tour as part of an enhanced guest experience for kids! She’s applied ARHU’s motto of “Be Worldwise” at her internship where she often interacts with staff, students, faculty and artists from all regions of the world.

Organization: Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF)
Painter helps CBF, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of the Chesapeake Bay, build their relationship with the community through digital media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. As a communication major focusing on public relations, Painter says his ARHU classes in news editing and writing have prepared him to take on the task of assisting CBF in sharing its stories via social media.

Pavlo’s spending her second summer interning for Nickelodeon’s Creative Resources Department where she develops product packaging and applies her creative ideas to things like toys, food products and stationery for company brands like SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer! She applies her studies in art theory and aesthetics to create clean, bold and beautiful designs for her projects.

Land supports the day-to-day marketing services at MRIS, which drives nearly $100 billion in real estate transactions each year. She helps with the logistics for the company’s events, training and road-shows and manages the company’s website and social media. Land says classes like her Communication in Action course have helped her brainstorm ways to make the company’s products appeal to customers.

Carey works for the National Geographic in the Children’s Books department researching upcoming books, reading book proposals and editing manuscripts for various editors. Carey credits her ARHU sponsored study abroad trip to Sevilla, Spain in helping prepare her for projects where she was required to have a rich understanding of geography and culture.
